Biography Part 2 - Early Career

After graduating from Oxford, Norman Manley enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery to fight in the First World War. During the war he was promoted from gunner to corporal and was awarded the military medal. However, tragedy struck the Manley family as Norman's brother Roy was killed in battle.

Norman Manley returned to England after the war where he married his cousin, the artist Edna Swithenbank.

In 1922 Manley returned to Jamaica where he became one of the countries leading lawyers He is reputed to have never lost a murder case which he defended.
