Biography Part 7 - The 1920 U.N.I.A. Conference

By 1920 the UNIA had undergone significant growth, with around 4 million members spread over more than 1000 branches in over 40 countries. In August of 1920 the first International UNIA convention was held in Madison Square Garden New York, commencing with a parade down Lenox Avenue in Harlem. Garvey unveiled his plan to built an African Nation state and was elected as the provisional president of Africa and Travelling Commissioner for the U.N.I.A but was denied permission to travel to Africa by immigration authorities.
