Falmouth Wharves - Falmouth

Evidence of Falmouth's illustrious history as a shipping port can be found in the warehouses which still stand at Falmouth Wharves. The warehouses are traditional large brick or stone structures with a single story design. In its heyday Falmouth Wharves loaded around 20 to 25 ships a day with sugar and rum from the 88 surrounding sugar estates. The arrival of the steamship in the middle of the 19th century heralded the decline in popularity of Falmouth's wharves. The port was not deep enough to accommodate these heavy ships and Falmouth was soon eclipsed by nearby Montego Bay as a commercial port.
