The Phoenix Foundry, Falmouth

The Phoenix Foundry - Falmouth

The most eye-catching sight in Falmouth is the conical dome rising from the Phoenix Iron Foundry at the east entrance to the town. The Phoenix Foundry was established in 1810 and is one of Jamaica's few remaining relics of the industrial age. The foundry repaired broken metalwork of ships which came to dock at Falmouth Harbour. These ships often sustained damage on their journey from far afield destinations such as Africa and Europe. The foundry also repaired machinery from the sugar plantations and manufactured bedsteads for the British Army.
