Morant Point Lighthouse

The Morant Point Lighthouse marks the most easterly point in Jamaica. It is also the oldest cast iron lighthouse built in the Western Hemisphere.
The lighthouse was designed by Alexander Gordon and the 100ft iron tube was cast in London in 1841. When it arrived in Jamaica, it was erected by George Grove (namesake of the "Golden Grove" community) and Kru men from Africa. The Kru men were a group of free Africans who travelled to Jamaica as labourers after emancipation.
The Morant Point lighthouse is fairly difficult to reach as the road leading to it is not paved and can become swampy if rain has been falling.
