The Gallery Carriacou is a fine art gallery, on the grounds of the Hotel Mocking Bird Hill. The gallery mostly features sculptures, painting and ceramic work but special events (such as dance and literature) are sometimes held here. The art displayed in the Gallery Carriacou throws the spotlight on to Jamaican artists who have broken away from the "island art" label which focuses on clichéd reggae / beach inspired work. The gallery usually features a number of pieces by owner, Barbara Walker.
Barbara Walker has a strong background in European art, having studied fine arts at the École des Beaux Arts in Geneva and Dijon, she then moved to cologne in Germany where she worked as an artist for 15 years. Barbara returned to Jamaica in 1993 and became co-owner of the Hotel Mocking Bird Hill. She still finds time to continue producing art work, much of which can be seen at Gallery Carriacou, she also offers 1 to 1 art classes.
