Roxborough
Roxborough - South East of Mandeville, follow the signs from the main south coast road
Roxborough Great House is the birthplace of Jamaican national hero Norman Washington Manley. The property was originally part of the much larger Roxbro Castle Estate. Samuel Manley (Norman's father) purchased a part of the land at the end of the 19th century and on 4 July 1893 Norman Washington Manley was born there. The Manley family lived at Roxborough until 1903 when they moved to St. Catherine Parish.
The property fell in to a state of disrepair over time and was eventually destroyed by a fire in 1968. All that survives today is a terraced garden, the foundations of the house and the barbeque used for drying Pimento grains.
The name Roxborough is believed to be of Scottish origin.
A pilgrimage to Roxborough is held every year on 4th July, the anniversary of Norman Manley's birth.
