Damian Marley - Welcome to Jamrock (2005)
Following the critical acclaim of the 2001 album "Halfway Tree", Damian Marley was well and truly on the world music radar. There was therefore much well-deserved excitement about the release of his next album, Welcome to Jamrock.
Summer 2005 saw the release of the eponymous "Welcome to Jamrock" single which became a global hit. The album was released in 2006 and became Damian Marley's commercial breakthrough, bringing his music to the attention of music fans worldwide, not just to reggae, dancehall and world music. The album does not, however, represent a sell-out or a dumbing down of Damian Marley's music; if anything, Welcome to Jamrock is grittier, edgier and bolder than Halfway Tree.
Welcome to Jamrock won the 2006 Grammy awards for Best Reggae Album and Best Urban / Alternative Album.
Welcome to Jamrock includes several traits from Jr Gong's previous albums, such as:
- significant involvement from half-brother Stephen Marley (on vocals and co-production)
- a range of prestigious guest vocals, including Nas, Buju Banton, Bobby Brown and Eek-a-mouse
- reworking's of several Bob Marley tracks ("Exodus" reworked as "Move" and a cover of "Pimpa's Paradise")
- a variety of musical styles and lyrical topics.
