Water Square - Falmouth

Water Square forms the town square and is the busy hub of Falmouth.

Falmouth boasted running water before many of the world's major cities. A circular stone reservoir once stood in the middle of Water Square, holding water which was carried from the Martha Brae river along an aqueduct. Water was then pumped in to private houses or carried from the reservoir by slaves. The reservoir was built in 1798, before even New York has running water.

The reservoir was demolished in 1954. In its place there is now a garden and a fountain.

Falmouth was the venue for the opening ceremony of the 2007 ICC cricket world cup. Water Square underwent major renovation as part of an extensive beautification project to mark the event.
